"The Biggest Little Town in the USA"

Preston Maryland, "The Biggest Little Town in the USA", combines a proud history with modern accomplishment. Its slogan is based on historical facts such as: Preston led the nation in the percentage of residents who paid Federal income taxes; first town of its size to completely pave its sidewalks with concrete; sewer system installed about 1914; and electric street lights installed before 1910. The tranquil villages of Preston and neighboring Linchester were once the focal point for great drama associated with the Underground Railroad. Linchester Mill is a Maryland Chesapeake Bay Area Civil War Trail site. Renovation of the grist mill (established in 1681) and surrounding site is a State funded project of the Caroline County Historical Society. Located off Preston's Main Street (MD 16/331 over Hunting Creek) it is one of the oldest settlements in Caroline County.

Today Preston is a peaceful, thriving community with a hearty mix of descendants of original and early settlers, whose forebears handed down high ideals and traditional values of family, home, church, and Country; newly arrived young couples who wish to raise their children in such a community; and retirees seeking a peaceful, wholesome lifestyle. Old mansions and early-built homes (moved from old farmsteads during Preston's early days) stand side-by-side in attractive harmony with new modern communities (Apple Lane and Tidewater Farms) and quality custom-built homes.

Preston is proud to boast that its elementary school is one of two Blue Ribbon schools in Maryland. On March 1, 2006, the Maryland State Board of Education officially recognized Preston Elementary School as a National Blue-Ribbon Distinguished School for 2005. This honor was given to only fifty-four schools in the United States. In addition to scholastic achievement, Preston's Little League Baseball team won the State Championship and finished runner-up in the WORLD LITTLE LEAGUE FINALS. They were selected from a group of 700, whereas other areas had four or five thousand.

We invite you to plan a visit to "The Biggest Little Town in the USA" which is easily accessible on MD highway 331/16. Preston offers unique shops, small businesses, annual carnival, summer flea market and annual Arts and Music Festival at Linchester Mill, park, churches, and easy access to fishing on the nearby Choptank river.
